Whats on My Workdesk Wednesday 264? Trial runs

Hello fellow Desker from Julia's place over at Stamping Ground.  Welcome to my desk in Cape Town, South Africa.

I have been very Steam punk inspired lately and am busy with some trial run stuff on a grand scale...hence the cog and ceiling tile balancing (precariously I see) on a polystyrene cornice...I need to work out costs and time taken to make these things as I have to do a quote.  Where are the admin fairies for this?  Art is fun.  Quoting is not. Its scary stuff!

Here are the 3 ATCs I have received in the last 2 weeks from our WOYWW 5 birthday swap.  I am still waiting for 1 that I am aware of.  Receiving these in the post has been like mini Christmases in my post box.  So nice to have a happy surprise when I open it!
Thank you Debbie, Kim Young and Robyn for my treasures.

Now I am off to see what you have on your desk for investigation and admiration.

  1. Hi Bella,
Oh yes, getting some happy mail is great, isn't it?
Am wondering what you are going to do with the steampunk thingy?
Will look forward to seeing that :)

  2. Humm I wouldn't know how to quote that it's so tough to figure out the tile looks wild did you make it out of clay? Hugs Nikki 12

  3. Totally agree with you there - I have LOADS of articles, mostly in old Somerset Studio mags, that talk about pricing art for sale. The depressing thing is if you tot up the ACTUAL cost of the supplies, it tends to get close to what the normal person thinks is "reasonable" to pay. If you actually add in a price for the TIME it takes you to create it, it tips over the edge and people say "Too Much!" and if you add in other administrative costs ( the article I am thinking of suggests some fee for overhead, like "rent" on your craft space, phone and internet...well to be fair this article might have been so far back the internet was in it's infancy LOL! ...etc) it would mean a card costs £20. Good luck wth it all and will look forward to seeing the final piece.

    Happy WOYWW!

  6. I hate pricing. Used to do wedding and special cakes and worked for about 10p an hour in the end.
Wondering what you are doing with those big and gorgeous artworks?

  7. Well, that's a bobby dazzler of a cog, isn't it? Lol!! I love it actually and can't wait to see what you do with it. Steampunk is just fantastic, I love the designs so much :-)
I hated pricing for craft fairs too...people just won't pay what something should really cost.....

  9. WOW love that ceiling tile and that huge gear! I have been into Steampunk for awhile and like my work the best when I am in the grunge and punk mode. I agree we need someone to do the quotes for us. I usually go to Etsy or other spots and see what they are pricing theirs for cause I usually sell mine too cheap. Have a great week. LOoking forward to seeing what you come up with using the tile and gear. Vickie #40

  14. Your desk looks really inspiring.
Hope sorting out your pricing is not too much of a chore. I've just started with 'Pay What You Want' pricing and am really curious to see how that works out!

  17. Hi Bella,

You have a lot of cubbies all around your desk - love that. My new desk set up has a window right in front of it so I'm not going to block it too much.

The cog and ceiling tile are great - especially the ceiling tile. It's so intricate. As for pricing, that's a tough one. I've sold at crafts fair and never really used a formula. There's lot of suggestions on pinterest though.

Thank you for visiting me already.
    Happy WOYWW

  19. Absolutely love that tile Bella, but don't envy you your task of costing the project. Those ATC's are gorgeous, I hope mine finds it's way to you soon, as I said let me know if not and I will send another. Lots of interesting things on your desk to nosey and wonder about. Do you paint the lids of your distress paint? Love that they all have a self coloured top.

  20. HI Bella, Gosh those steam punk bits are huge, at first glance I thought I was seeing a desk that was in miniature and the tile and coge were smallish, and then I realised they were, like 15 to 18" across. That's going to be one very big card when it is finished!
    HAve fun

  22. I know what you mean about pricing. If I charged for all the time it takes to do a painting I'd never sell one. The huge cog and tile have really got me interested, love to see what you do with them. You sure did have a mini Christmas, love those ATC's just wish I'd had the time to play too.
    Have a great week,

  23. Now that is a grand scale. Be sure to show TH what you come up with, I know it will be genius.
I didnt/haven't had a chance to thank you for the gorgeous ATC and gift that you sent via Ali..we used them the weekend of the crop and even my neanderthal teenage section thought they were great for our al fresco dining. Thank you for thinking of me. Sorry that this isn't exaclty a personal card based thank you, but am thinking that by the time I'm up to actually doing anything, you won't be talking to me!
